Louisiana Hotels Filling Up with Super Bowl, Mardi Gras Fans
Description: Super Bowl and Mardi Gras fans still looking for a hotel room in New Orleans this weekend are now hard-pressed to find one. The only rooms available in the New Orleans area are at a Motel 6 in Gentilly. Anyone who wants to stay there will have to pay for a minimum of 3 nights.
The spillover of Super Bowl fans is good for both Baton Rouge and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Renee Areng with the Baton Rouge Visitors and Convention Center says she won't know until after the Super Bowl how the big game impacts occupancy in the capitol city. She says however she expects it to be well over 70 percent. Areng says events have been planned in Town Square primarily to accommodate the Super Bowl crowd.A couple of Parades will also roll in Baton Rouge this weekend. The Krewe of Artemis rolls at 7:00 pm Friday night. It's followed at 2:00 Saturday by Krewe of Mystique. Private companies are also supplying transportation from Baton Rouge to New Orleans for the Super Bowl on Sunday for people who don't want to fight the New Orleans crowds.
Hotels along the Mississippi Gulf Coast are also competing for the overflow of Mardi Gras fans. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Hotel Motel Association says its hotel rooms are well over 70-percent capacity, which is great for this time of year. They have already reached a point where they have had to book five buses to transport people from Mississippi hotels to New Orleans for the game. A bus will also transport people from their hotels to New Orleans on Saturday, just for those who want to get an early start on life in the French Quarter.
