Description: Stress is building once again over low water levels in the Mississippi River, so much so that some federal lawmakers are asking the Army Corps of Engineers to release more water from the Missouri River into the Mississippi. The Corps has expressed reluctance to divert more water from the Missouri, saying it could negatively impact recreational activities and wildlife along the Missouri. Army Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy says she believes her agency can solve the navigation problems along the Mississippi by clearing debris that makes navigation treacherous during periods of low water. That process is already underway.
