Number of Louisiana Teachers Receiving NBCT Certifications Drops
Description: Louisiana has experienced a sharp drop in the number of teachers receiving their National Board for Professional Teachers Standards certification. Only 54 teachers in Louisiana received the ranking in 2012, down from 102 in 2011. The cost of going through the certification process may be high for many teachers; $2,500. But, the reward is higher. Many receive a $5,000 a year stipend for the life of the certificate.
A new study by the Harvard University Center for Education Policy Research found that on average, Los Angeles teachers who have the certification significantly outperformed their peers with the same level of education, but were not nationally board certified. The president of the the NBCT says, "The latest data illustrate what education policy makers already know: Teachers who become national Board certified are highly effective and strengthen student achievement"
NBCT says teachers "earn their certification through an intensive, multi-year process of standards-based performance assessment and peer review. The rigor of the National Board Certification is comparable to that of the certification process for the medical, legal and other major professions."
