Description: Assumption Parish Officials have ordered about 150 people to leave their homes because of a sink hole that evolved overnight and has now spread to one and a half acres. The trouble is in the vicinity of Highway 70 and Bayou Corne.

Houma Today reports scientists from the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources have been observing the area for several weeks because of strange rumbling sounds and bubbles. A salt mining cave was being operated in the area until it was shutdown last year. The scientist are trying to determine whether the sinkhole and the cavern are related.

According to Houma today, Texas Brine Company was in charge of he salt mining operation and the company has been ordered to evaluate the integrity of its salt cavern.
