Winners of DOTD 2012 Louisiana Aviation Art Contest Announced

Description: There are some very excited young artists in our state today. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has announced the winners of its 2012 Aviation Art Contest. The theme for this year’s contest was “Louisiana: A Celebration of Statehood and Aviation!”

Students, ages 6-17, were urged to visit their local airports and then create artwork based on the history of aviation in our state. The goal is to encourage young people to familiarize themselves with and participate in aeronautics, engineering, and science.

The first place winners are:

Ages 6-7 Cooper Ancale of St. John Primary School

Ages 8-9 Riley Richard of St. Theresa Middle School

Ages 10-11 Caroline Daigle of Ridge Elementary School

Ages 12-13 Lexie Vass of St. Theresa Middle School

Ages 14-15 Jamie Jenkins of Bayou Chicot School

Ages 16-17 Rachel Hava of Mount Carmel Academy

Winners receive aviation-related prizes donated by the following aviation associations.

Louisiana Airport Managers and Associates - iPods, model airplanes, and remote control airplanes.

Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association - free website training sessions, hats, and books.

Experimental Aircraft Association- introductory flights through a national program called the Young Eagles Program. The introductory flights are awarded to first place winners in each category.
